JERUSALEM (AP) – The last two of six Palestinian prisoners who escaped from an Israeli maximum security prison two weeks ago were arrested again on Sunday morning, the IDF said.

The two were captured in an IDF raid on their hometown of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, ending an intense and embarrassing pursuit that exposed security loopholes after the six men dug a tunnel out of their cell on September 6.

Palestinian media reported that clashes erupted in Jenin when Israeli troops entered the city, but an Israeli police spokesman said the two escapees, Munadil Nafayat and Iham Kamamji, were arrested without resistance in a house where they had taken refuge and were taken for questioning.

Fouad Kamamji, Iham’s father, told The Associated Press that his son called him when Israeli troops surrounded the house and said he would surrender “so as not to endanger the owners of the house. the House “.

The escapes sparked a massive pursuit operation that captured the first four detainees in two separate operations in northern Israel. The six detainees come from Jenin.

Five of the prisoners belong to the militant Islamic Jihad group, four of whom are serving life sentences, and the sixth is a member of the secular Fatah group of President Mahmoud Abbas.

For the Palestinians, the prisoners who dug the tunnel for months and escaped were “heroes”. For Israel, they were “terrorists” who participated in or planned attacks targeting the Israeli military and civilians.
